In a recent study, researchers at Yale have found that three genetic variations made their group of subjects more likely to develop an addiction to marijuana.
The genes in question are also linked to depression and schizophrenia, though it’s never been proven that marijuana causes either. They just share common genes.
However, their study found that 10% of the people examined who smoked marijuana developed addict-like behavior toward the drug.
As for what this all leads to…it’s unclear. It’s possible that if the three genes are eventually definitviely linked to marijuana addiction…
..then children could be screened for those genes at an early age to learn if they’re susceptible to the addictive behavior.
But the relationship between having the gene and addiction might still not be as strong as the proven relationship between socially removed teenagers and addiction…
…so it’s possible that even if the link between genes and addiction is proven, it’s still not the most logical place to start in the social battle against drug dependency.
